Slow Telnet Response of Windows  2003 Server
Hello , I've searched Internet about this problem but couldn't find any solution. After I upgraded my system from Windows 2000 server to Windows server 2003 ;telnet response of system decreased dramatically. As I telnet to Windows 2003 system ,the login prompt shows in 15-20 seconds, how ever in windows 2000 it comes in just a 1-2 seconds. In my opinion this is because of some configuration.Any help is much appriciated. As I said before I am susspicious about the configuration of telnet authentication thus slow is after you send login credentials ? or is slow even in showing login prompt ?Edoardo Benussi - Microsoft MVP Management Infrastructure - Systems Administration https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/Profile/Benussi Windows Server Italian Forum Moderator edo[at]mvps[dot]org

As you discovered the telnet usage in Windows is very limited, and therefore so are the solutions to problems. I worked on an issue with telnet last year, and found this helpful in general troubleshooting....at least for the general suggestion of using process monitor. http://networkadminkb.com/kb/Knowledge%20Base/Windows2003/Telnet%20Server%20responses%20with%20%27Connection%20to%20host%20lost%27%20to%20Telnet%20Clients.aspx Also, if it is really taking 20 seconds, i would look at doing a network capture and compare and contrast the 2000 with the 2003 captures. Did you by chance install the Unix Services from Microsoft? Some people mistakenly believe these are needed to enable telnet in 2003, they are not. Telnet is they by default if SP1 is installed. Check the telnet process version with other servers, or the internet to find out if it is the newest one (tlntsess.exe i think). Service packs and hotfixes as well.
